The patient is placed in a fully supported position using a large a base as possible. As the patient can often move at another joint and appear to be moving at the painful joint if it is frequently necessary to fix joints in which undesirable movements could occur, so that “trick” movements and “Cheating” are prevented. For example, in abduction of one hit unwanted movement in the contra lateral hip is prevented by taking the leg to the side of the bed and flexing the knee over the side with the foot supported. Similarly, for extension of the hit unwanted movement is prevented by the patient fully flexing the contra lateral leg and, if possible, holding the thigh against the abdomen.
